03 — METHODOLOGY

Starting practice:
initial material, colour, geometric and formal conditions.

TCFM is therefore an iterative, reflexive and evidence-responsive methodological framework rather than a fixed sequence.

TRANSFORMATIVE COLOUR–FORM METHODOLOGY

–––––––
TCFM

TCFM is not a fixed method. It will be tested through artistic practice, examined through reflection, and progressively developed through evidence generated during the research.

Its final form will emerge through the relationship between practice, evidence, reflection, and methodological development. The final methodology is therefore an outcome of the research, rather than a conclusion predetermined in advance.

The artwork is not only an outcome of the research; it is also a site where research takes place and knowledge is generated.

Making therefore becomes a mode of investigation through which material, formal, perceptual and spatial relationships can be tested, encountered and understood.

TCFM DEVELOPMENT CYCLE

PRACTICE → EVIDENCE → REFLECTION →
METHODOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT → FURTHER PRACTICE

The methodology develops through repeated cycles of practice and evidence, rather than through a predetermined linear process.

Practice produces evidence. Reflection interprets and questions that evidence. Methodological development informs further practice.

HOW WILL I KNOW THAT THE METHODOLOGY IS DEVELOPING?

TCFM will not be evaluated solely through the success or completion of individual artworks. Its development will be evidenced through the processes, relationships, decisions, changes, and patterns that emerge across sustained artistic practice.

Evidence will include:

  • changes in artistic decisions

  • material behaviour and responses

  • recurring formal and spatial relationships

  • unexpected results and discoveries

  • perceptual shifts

  • productive and unsuccessful experiments

  • changes in direction

  • comparisons across experiments

  • reflective writing

  • relationships between lived experience and resulting forms

Evidence will be considered comparatively and cumulatively, allowing patterns, shifts, and relationships to emerge across the research.

An unexpected or unsuccessful experiment may be significant when it redirects the investigation, challenges an assumption, or generates new understanding.

Together, these forms of evidence enable TCFM to be tested, critically examined, refined, and developed through practice rather than simply asserted.

PHOTOGRAPH 03—ENCOUNTER

Encounter as evidence: an unexpected result that redirects the investigation and generates a new line of enquiry.

Together, these images demonstrate that research takes place through making, observing, and responding, rather than solely through the production of finished artworks.

Experimentation as evidence: testing possibilities through making.

EMERGENT OUTCOMES

New forms · new relationships · material discoveries · unexpected results · perceptual insights · methodological development · emerging knowledge

These outcomes remain open because they emerge through the process of artistic investigation.

The research design is structured, while its knowledge outcomes remain open.

Development through comparison: changes in artistic decisions, material behaviour and formal relationships.

METHODOLOGICAL POSITION

TCFM is developed through this research rather than assumed to be complete at its beginning.

Through repeated cycles of making, evidence and reflection, its principles are progressively tested, refined and reformulated.

The final methodology is therefore an outcome of the research, not a conclusion predetermined in advance.
